Brussels, 26 February 2018

The European Union is adopting today three new programmes worth over €150 million under the European Union Emergency Trust Fund for Africa, directly following up on the commitments made by the Joint African Union – European Union – United Nations Task Force to address the migrant situation in Libya.

The new programmes complement ongoing efforts of the European Union to protect migrants and provide them with sustainable reintegration options in Libya, along the Central Mediterranean Route and in Ethiopia.

HIGHLIGHTS

• US$120.7 million funding gap still exists for activities under the 2016 HRP.

• More than 89,000 people benefited from life-saving medicines and medical supplies provide by WHO across Libya.

• 6,770 MT of food for more than 113,000 people distributed in October but funding gaps remain.

• 304 migrants voluntarily repatriated in October to Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Chad, Ethiopia, Kenya and Gambia.

Humanitarian Affairs

Governments and civil society groups across the Maghreb used the observance of World AIDS Day on 01 December to raise awareness about the disease in the region, reports Magharebia. Morocco reported 500 new cases of HIV in 2010, bringing the total number of citizens infected with HIV to 28,000. Mauritania reported 25,000 people living with HIV/AIDS in 2010. In Algeria, 12,000 of the 19,000 people living with HIV/AIDS are women.
