MIGRANT BASELINE

The 21th round of data collection took place in July and August 2018. During this round a revised version of the data collection methodology was used to capture additional information on the needs and challenges migrants are facing.

DTM identified there to be at least 669,176 migrants in Libya. Migrants were identified in all baladiyas, within 554 communities and originated from more than 41 countries.

Humanitarian response to the needs of individuals escaping smugglers and traffickers in Bani Walid

In the night of Wednesday to Thursday, 23-24 May 2018, approximately 140 individuals from Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia managed to escape captivity from the notorious trafficker Mousa Diab in Bani Walid.

The Event Tracker is part of IOM Libya’s Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) programme. DTM is a suite of tools that provide a comprehensive articulation of Libya’s human mobility patterns. The Event Tracker is a biweekly tool collecting and triangulating information on the whole of Libya on any incidents related to IDPs, returnees and migrants, especially in regards to large population movements updates on border closures and new routes. OVERVIEW

MIGRANT BASELINE

In the 17th round of DTM Libya data collection taking place in January and February 2018, IOM identified 704,142 migrants in Libya. Migrants were identified in 99 baladiyas and 551 muhallas and originating from up to 40 countries.

In addition to those identified in urban and rural settings migrants in Libya were also recorded in detention centers. Based on DTM’s latest data, the number of migrants in Libya’s Detention Centers is 4,443 individuals (15/02/18)*.

Tripoli – Nineteen people were killed and 49 were injured in the early morning of 14 February when the truck they were travelling in crashed near Bani Waleed, Libya. According to some of the survivors of the accident which occurred around 3am, around 180 migrants were crammed into the truck's cargo containers. The survivors also said that the smugglers' truck crashed when it drove into a large hole in the road; overloaded with people, it became unbalanced, resulting in the deadly accident.

Tripoli - At nearly 3:00am on 14 February, a truck accident occurred, leaving 19 people dead and 49 people injured near Bani Waleed in Libya. The migrants on board reported that 180 people were crammed into the truck's cargo containers. They also said that the smugglers' truck crashed when it drove into a large hole in the road; overloaded with people, it became unbalanced. Out of the total migrants involved, approximately 138 were Eritrean, while the remaining were Somali and Ethiopian.

14 Feb 2018 description

On February 14 at 3:00 AM, a large truck used by smugglers to transport migrants from the As Saddadah (60 km south-east of Bani Waleed) to Tarhuna, was involved in a car accident causing the death of 19 migrants and injuring 49 more migrants. Out of the 180 migrants involved, 138 were Eritreans while the remaining were Somalis and Ethiopians.

Out of the 19 reported victims, 4 were children, 1 was an adult woman and 14 adult men. The wounded are reportedly: 10 children, 9 adult women and 30 men.

During October – November 2017 DTM Libya’s Mobility Tracking identified 432,574 migrants* across all 22 mantikas (regions) in Libya. Migrants were identified in 99 baladiyas and 531 muhallas.
