Innovative ways to prevent and respond to major humanitarian crises top of the agenda at #HPC2014

Innovative solutions to prevent and tackle drought, famine and other major humanitarian crises will be top of the agenda at this week’s Humanitarian Partnership Conference 2014 (#HPC2014), which comes as food insecurity grips Kenya and the wider East and Horn of Africa region in general.

  1. Population and General

There are approximately 20 million pastoralists across Sub-Saharan Africa. Pastoralists - people who depend primarily on livestock or livestock products for income and food- typically graze their animals on communally managed or open-access pastures, and move with them seasonally. Adding in agro-pastoralists-who derive 50 per cent of their income from non-livestock resources-the numbers reaches over 30 million in the Greater Horn of Africa (CAADP Policy Brief No.6, March 2012).

As the UN launches its appeal for the East Africa drought (on Friday 7th April), Save the Children is calling on international donors to respond immediately to help save the lives of three million children in Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia who are at risk of malnutrition.

Three million children across Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia - 600,000 of whom are under five years old - are suffering from severe food and water shortages, as the region experiences its worst drought since 1993. Up to 42 per cent of children and adults are at risk of malnutrition in the worst affected areas in the region.
