The food security situation has much improved thanks to good harvests this year, but pockets of food insecurity are predicted among poor households who lost livestock last year in northern Badakhshan and the Wakhan Corridor. GHNI is now expanding its mushroom project, working with widows to yield income by providing more mushroom spores as a small business opportunity.

GHNI’s Project Manager reports: “Oribigud Village was facing water shortages both for irrigation and household use. The line from the mountain spring to the village was broken and the water that ran through the channel was insufficient to reach the village in the fall. However, this water line was just fixed, bringing water to the village.”

WFP Aviation is the world’s leading air service when it comes to saving lives. It is unlike any other airline: 80 percent of the 240 destinations served by WFP Aviation are in places which commercial airlines consider no-fly zones.

Summary

The present report covers activities from 1 July 2009 to 30 June 2010. Within this period, the Emergency Relief Coordinator allocated $448.3 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund to implement life-saving activities in 52 countries and territories. Funding was provided to 15 humanitarian agencies, many of which carried out their programmes in conjunction with non-governmental partners.

Highlights

Infant and Young Child Feeding Practices - directly affect the nutritional status especially of children under two years of age and, ultimately, have an impact on child survival. Appropriate and timely support for infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices in emergency situation can save life, ICYF practices have been investigated by ACF, UNICEF and UNHCR in Côte d'Ivoire, Uganda and Syria. The newly revised indicator list was applied by SC-UK in Afghanistan and in the Gaza strip of the occupied Palestinian territory.

Foreword: A year of challenges

It is my pleasure to present to you the 2008 Annual Report for the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF).

For the millions of people affected by natural disasters and conflict worldwide, 2008 was a year of enormous challenges. More than 211 million people were affected by natural disasters, with more than 238,000 killed and US$200 billion in damages, making 2008 one of the most devastating years in terms of human and material losses.
