Sometime soon, rinderpest will officially be declared extinct, marking the first time mankind has ever eradicated an animal disease
Rome, 30 November 2009 - In animal health circles, it's the equivalent of the Apollo 11 moon landing: some time in the next 18 months, FAO jointly with the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and other partners will officially declare one of the most devastating animal diseases known to man, rinderpest, as eradicated.
It will be the first time in history that humankind has succeeded in killing off an animal disease and only the second time a …

Five "mega-trends" -- population growth, urbanization, climate change, migration and food, water and energy insecurity –- made contemporary forms of displacement increasingly complex, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees told the Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian and Cultural) today.
This bulletin provides information on price changes for the most commonly consumed staples and the potential impacts of these changes on the cost of the food basket. Staples contribute 40 - 80% of energy intake for the most vulnerable population groups in developing countries. Therefore, even a small increase in staple food prices has a high impact on overall food consumption, especially when the food basket is composed of very few staples.
The bulletin covers 60 countries over the period July to September 2009 .

Huge Challenge Posed by Predicted Population Growth in Years Ahead
In a world where 1 billion people already suffered from chronic hunger, global food supplies must increase by 50 per cent to meet expected demand from a growing world population, the United States delegate told the Second Committee (Economic and Financial) today, as the Committee concluded its consideration of agriculture development and food security.
Today, a record one billion people - mostly women and children - go to bed hungry each night. Hunger is on the march, with the food, fuel and financial crises making hunger the Millennium Development Goal most threatened.
WFP's mission of reaching the hungry is more important than ever, and we depend on the support of more than 100 nations. Germany has always been a key donor, and in this year of crises for the world's most vulnerable, it has provided a record contribution to fight hunger.
Every year the deaths of more than three million children under five - equivalent to the total UK population of that age - are attributable to undernutrition and yet the problem is being given low international priority.
This is according to a new report published by the Department for International Development which will form the evidence base for their forthcoming Nutrition Strategy.
80 percent of the world's undernourished children under 5 years of age live in just 20 countries .
As part of its contribution to child survival programming, the International Federation's Global Measles and Polio Initiative aims to enable Red Cross Red Crescent National Societies to continue their work as key social mobilization partners in the two related successful global health initiatives: the Measles Initiative (MI) and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI).
NEW YORK / GENEVA - Global campaigns to fight diarrhoea - the second deadliest illness for children - must be re-energized to prevent the deaths of millions in the developing world, UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO) said today as they released a new report on the disease.
"It is a tragedy that diarrhoea, which is little more than an inconvenience in the developed world, kills an estimated 1. 5 million children each year," said UNICEF Executive Director, Ann M. Veneman.
Sixty-fourth General Assembly
5th & 6th Meetings (AM & PM)
To effectively tackle terrorism, entrenched poverty and the threat of weapons proliferation, a more equitable multilateral system that valued diversity and fostered a "climate of dialogue" was urgently needed, world leaders attending the General Assembly's annual debate stressed today, as they pushed for a more democratic United Nations.
ECRE's Recommendations for the Stockholm Programme
With the publication of its Communication 'An area of freedom, security and justice serving the citizen', the Commission has presented its views on the EU's priorities in the field of justice and home affairs, including in the field of asylum, for the next five years. The Communication will be used as the basis for discussions between the various stakeholders at EU level that should result in the adoption in December 2009 by the Heads of State and Government of the so-called Stockholm Programme.
What is resettlement and why is it needed?
A large majority of refugees worldwide find themselves in places far away from the EU. They are to be found in countries neighbouring, or in the same region, as their country of origin, in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. By the end of 2008, developing countries hosted 8.4 million refugees, 80 per cent of the global refugee population, with Pakistan alone hosting 1.8 million refugees and Syria 1.1 million. As host countries are often developing ones, with limited resources, they cannot integrate large numbers of refugees.
