Between 1 January and 30 November 2017, 117,042 persons arrived in Italy by sea.
This is a 32% decrease compared to sea arrivals in the same period last year (173,008). In November 2017, 5,645 persons reached Italy by sea, compared to 13,581 registered at landing points in November 2016. Sea arrivals in November were slightly lower than in the previous month, when almost 6,000 persons reached Italian shores.

Between 1 January and 31 October 2017, 111,397 persons arrived in Italy by sea. This is a 30% decrease compared to sea arrivals in the same period last year (159,427).
Disembarkations slowed as of mid-July 2017, with monthly arrival numbers being significantly lower since, compared to 2016. In October 2017, 5,979 persons reached Italy by sea, compared to 27,384 registered at landing points in October 2016.

Between 1 January and 30 September 2017, 105,418 persons arrived in Italy by sea. This is a 20% decrease compared to sea arrivals in the same period last year (132,043). Disembarkations slowed as of mid-July 2017. Arrival numbers have consequently been significantly lower in July, August, and September this year, compared to 2016.

Between 1 January and 31 July 2017, 95,213 persons arrived in Italy by sea. This is a 2% increase compared to sea arrivals in the same period last year (93,774).

Trends in sea arrivals should be assessed over time, as fluctuations on a monthly basis may be linked to various factors, including weather and sea conditions or the situation in the countries of departure and origin. Geopolitical developments and the capacity of smugglers to organize departures may also affect sea arrivals.

Ventimiglia, Italy- As a consequence of the ever-stricter border policies in place in Europe since the sharp increase in migration in 2015, the Italian town of Ventimiglia, near the French border, has turned into the main transit point for migrants trying to reach other EU countries from Italy. Since the end of 2016, Médécins Sans Frontières (MSF) has started providing maternal care and mental health support to migrants in transit to France, who are stuck at the border with no access to basic health care.

Between 1 January and 30 June 2017, 83,752 persons arrived in Italy by sea. This is a 19% increase compared to sea arrivals in the same period last year (70,222). In June, 23,524 persons reached Italian shores, compared to 22,371 who arrived in June 2016.

Oxfam has joined a program to help Syrians find refuge in Europe. 60 people, including many families, will arrive in Italy today to seek asylum as part of a humanitarian visa programme approved by the Italian government. The people will be hosted by Oxfam in the Italian region of Tuscany for the duration of their asylum process.

Italy is opening a humanitarian corridor for refugees from Eritrea, South Sudan and Somalia with the support of Caritas. An agreement with the Italian government was signed last week.

The women, men and children will come from refugee camps in Ethiopia. Once in Italy, Caritas will help the refugees through the project “Protetto. Rifugiato a casa mia” (Protected: a refugee in my home) which is in its third year of helping house refugees with members of local communities in Italy.
