“I’m pleased to announce that a first group of 25 extremely vulnerable refugees were evacuated today, Saturday 11 November, from Libya to Niger by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency.

Among these 25 refugees, there were 15 women, six men and four children of Eritrean, Ethiopian and Sudanese nationalities. All of them will be hosted in a guesthouse in Niamey until their resettlement applications are processed.

  • The onset of the Deyr (October to December) season was significantly delayed over parts of southern and central Somalia by 20-30 days. Rainfall totals in October were less than 50 percent of average, following by increases in rainfall during the first 10 days of November. Seasonal performance has been better in neighboring areas Ethiopia, where rainfall has been average to above average.

Libya continues to be the main transit point for departure from North Africa towards Europe. UNHCR's interverntions at disembarkation points in Libya focus on the provision of life-saving assistance and protection monitoring, to identify persons in need of international protection, as well as vulnerable individuals, such as unaccompanied and separated children, elderly, medical cases, women at risk or victims of trafficking.

  1. Increased seasonal rainfall was recorded in Somalia and northeastern Kenya, helping to mitigate early-season moisture deficits, although dryness remains. Average to above-average rainfall forecast in mid- November is expected to continue to provide relief to the region.

  2. Heavy rainfall continues to sustain the risk for flooding in southeastern Kenya and northeastern Tanzania.

As of 31 October, United Nations-coordinated appeals and refugee response plans within the Global Humanitarian Overview (GHO) require US$24.1 billion to meet the humanitarian needs of 105.1 million particularly vulnerable people of an estimated 145 million crisis-affected people in 39 countries. The appeals are funded at $11.8 billion, leaving a shortfall of $12.3 billion. This is $1.5 billion less than the gap reported at the end of September 2017.

6 November 2017 (WMO) - It is very likely that 2017 will be one of the three hottest years on record, with many high-impact events including catastrophic hurricanes and floods, debilitating heatwaves and drought. Long-term indicators of climate change such as increasing carbon dioxide concentrations, sea level rise and ocean acidification continue unabated. Arctic sea ice coverage remains below average and previously stable Antarctic sea ice extent was at or near a record low.

Addis Ababa November 07/2017 Ethiopia is preparing its first-ever National Food and Nutrition Policy to fulfill the nation's ambition to end malnutrition and stunting by 2030, the Ministry of Health said.

Nutrition case team coordinator at the Ministry Birara Melesse told ENA that the policy focuses on reducing malnutrition, stunting and other nutrition related problems among children and mothers.

The policy will also focus on complimentary feeding for children under five as these periods are crucial for children’s healthy growth, he mentioned.

In Ethiopia’s Somali region, where an endless drought has decimated livestock and left families destitute, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) helps displaced families through these challenging times. With EU humanitarian support, they provide girls and women with ‘dignity kits’ among other items. The kits include Little Sun solar lamps.
