UNDP has joined the World Food Programme, UNICEF and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in responding to Ethiopia's drought emergency, which has caused almost complete exhaustion of surface and ground water resources in parts of the country, widespread death of livestock, meningitis outbreaks and migration of more than 120,000 ethnic Somalis. While rain fell on the affected areas in southern and eastern Ethiopia in mid-March, significant losses of livestock had already occurred and surviving animals are in poor condition.
