En el origen del proyecto que ha dado lugar a la creación del Observatorio de la Acción Humanitaria percibíamos la necesidad de hacer un seguimiento estable de la acción humanitaria en nuestro país, compartiendo un sentimiento muy extendido por aquellos que buscan la mejora del trabajo solidario a través de la reflexión, la discusión franca y la crítica (y autocrítica). Con esa intención los Informes anuales, iniciados con el análisis de 2003, pretenden ir cubriendo ese hueco, con clara vocación de permanencia y de apertura a la colaboración con la comunidad humanitaria española.

This had been the actual occurrence in Somali and Afar regions, South Omo Zone of SNNPR and Borena Zone of Oromiya that constitute the vast pastoralist communities.

The United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) has furnished $241 million to help provide relief to disaster-hit areas in some 30 countries since its establishment nine months ago, the world body's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced today.

Of the total, $164 million was disbursed from the rapid response facility for new or rapidly deteriorating emergencies in 24 countries. An additional $77 million from funds earmarked for under-funded emergencies was distributed across 16 countries.

In addition to the significant number of chronically food insecure people who will be assisted by the Productive Safety Net Program (PSNP) in 2007, escalating and high level prices, floods and the enduring impact of the pastoral crisis of 2005/06 have resulted in a continued need for additional humanitarian assistance in 2007, especially in the Somali region where the PSNP has not yet started.

GENEVA, December 27 (UNHCR) - As the fighting in Somalia intensifies, the UN refugee agency is mobilising staff and resources in preparation for possible widespread displacement in the region.

Although no large-scale refugee movements from Somalia have yet been recorded in neighbouring countries, UNHCR is immediately positioning relief items in the region for up to 50,000 people, as well as trucks and emergency staff.

Tropical Cyclone Bondo

Tropical Cyclone Bondo developed into a very powerful storm in the southwestern Indian Ocean. The storm intensity peaked at 110 knots before starting to weaken. By the time Bondo made landfall, it had been down graded to a tropical storm with winds at about 60 knots. Bondo developed on December 18th near Diego Garcia and dissipated on December 26th in the Mozambique Channel.

AWD CONTINUES SPREADING TO NEW AREAS

Although the Acute Watery Diarrhoea (AWD) situation appears to be stabilizing at a national level, the disease has continued to spread to new areas. Early this week, Gambella reported another outbreak of the disease in the region following a similar outbreak that was contained in April. A total of 72 cases with 2 deaths are reported in Gambella towns in the woredas of Itang, Jikaw, Lare and Wontoha. The majority of the cases are from the Nuer tribe.

-The horn is a peninsula of East Africa that juts into the Arabian Sea.

-The term also refers to the greater region containing the countries of Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia. It covers approximately 2 million sq km (770,000 sq mile). The population is about 86.5 million.

Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) is the application of safe insecticides to the indoor walls and ceilings of a home or structure in order to interrupt the spread of malaria by killing mosquitoes that carry the malaria parasite.
