WaPOR: database dissemination portal and APIs

The FAO portal to monitor Water Productivity through Open access of Remotely sensed derived data (WaPOR) monitors and reports on agriculture water productivity over Africa and the Near East.

It provides open access to the water productivity database and its thousands of underlying map layers, it allows for direct data queries, time series analyses, area statistics and data download of key variables associated to water and land productivity assessments.

Africa Weather Hazards

  1. Insufficient rain since January has resulted in large moisture deficits and below-average vegetation conditions over portions of northwestern Angola.

  2. Poorly-distributed rain since late February has resulted in abnormal dryness across central and northeastern Ethiopia.

  3. A slow onset to seasonal rainfall across the southern Gulf of Guinea countries has led to strengthening moisture deficits throughout the region.

6 November 2017 (WMO) - It is very likely that 2017 will be one of the three hottest years on record, with many high-impact events including catastrophic hurricanes and floods, debilitating heatwaves and drought. Long-term indicators of climate change such as increasing carbon dioxide concentrations, sea level rise and ocean acidification continue unabated. Arctic sea ice coverage remains below average and previously stable Antarctic sea ice extent was at or near a record low.

Pandemic H1N1: The pandemic is flaring up in our Region. Fourteen (14) countries are now affected with a total of 589 confirmed cases without death reported as of 31st of July 2009. The Regional Office for Africa is organizing an African Conference on Pandemic A (H1N1) in South Africa 11-13 August 2009 to reflect mainly on the impacts of the pandemic.

Conflict in the Kivus a humanitarian threat to the region

Armed conflict in the Kivus (eastern DRC) intensified in October leading to further displacement of civilians. As of 30 October, some 13,000 refugees - mainly from Rutshuru district in north Kivu - had crossed the border into Uganda, including 5,000 in the last week of October. UNHCR is currently making preparations to relocate the refugees from the reception centre at Nyakabande, Uganda, 15 km from the border, to Nakivale, an established camp about 300 km away.
