This dashboard analyses and represent information based on IOM data and reports by UNCTAD 2018, UNODC 2018 and ISS 2017, regarding the cost of the journey facilitated by smuggling networks from the Horn of Africa. Costs were available for movements related to 6 countries - Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, Yemen and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia -, and for 2 Routes: Northern and Eastern Route.

Background

An estimated 500,000 Ethiopians were present in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) once the amnesty period for the irregular migrants expired in March, 2017. The Government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (GoKSA) had previously the deadline several times.

The migrants arrive at the Bole Internal Airport in Addis Ababa, where they are regis by IOM staff before continuing on to their destination. IOM also provides support to the most vulnerable migrants in the form of basis assistance.

Regional Flow Monitoring Network

124 FMPs are currently active in three countries in the region.

As of the last report (July and August 2018) IOM identified at least 669,176 migrants currently in Libya. Migrants were identified in 100 municipalities, within 554 communities originating from more than 41 countries [primarily from Niger (19%), Egypt (14%) and Chad (14%)]. Information on current migration flows was collected through 1,897 assessments. Migrants were primarily located in Tripoli (22%), Misrata (12%) and Ejdabia (10%).

A total of 435 migrants were registered at MRCs across the region in October. The largest number of migrants was registered in Bosasso (134), followed by Hargeisa (130), Obock (92), Metema (59) and Semera (20). Almost a quarter of all registrations were children. The largest number of children were registered in Hargeisa (58) and Obock (24). While all 58 minors in Hargeisa were accompanied, 75% of minors in Obock were unaccompanied (18). Moreover, all registered minors in Semera (4) and Metema (10) and half of the registered minors in Bosasso (4) were unaccompanied.

Highlights

IOM estimates that above 220,000 individuals were returned to Ethiopia during the reporting period, out of which 176,426* were registered since April, 2017. Since May, 2017, it is estimated that 170,602 (16% voluntary returnees and 84% forced returnees) were registered and profiled upon arrival;

67% of reported migrants were adult and male, returning to Ethiopia involuntarily; 61% of migrants (above 6 years old) had primary level education, and approximately 26% had less than the primary level;

Le nombre d'individus observés aux FMPs a diminué de 18% entre le mois de Septembre et d'Octobre 2018, passant de 16 452 individus à 19 415 individus. Le mode de transport le plus utilisé par les migrants observés au cours de la période de référence est à pied (59%) est en voiture (33%).
