There is a powerful wind of hope blowing across the Horn of Africa region, said UN chief António Guterres on Sunday, in Saudi Arabia to witness the signing of a peace agreement between Ethiopia and Eritrea, ending decades of simmering conflict.

Saudi Arabia facilitated the agreement, and in a message on Twitter, the Foreign Ministry said that the accord, signed in Jeddah “is a historic milestone for the peoples of Ethiopia and Eritrea, and will contribute to strengthening security and stability in the region at large”.

  • In August, UNHCR provided 14,800 emergency kits to internally displaced Ethiopians in South Ethiopia. UNHCR has procured a total of 50,000 emergency kits with funding from CERF (UN’s Central Emergency Response Fund).
  • Ethiopian Government held consultations on the new National Comprehensive Refugee Response Strategy (NCRRS) which consolidates Ethiopia’s commitment to improve the lives of both refugees and host communities.

The rapidly warming ties between Eritrea and Ethiopia took another step forward Tuesday when the once-bitter rivals reopened their shared border afer two decades.

Yemane Meskel, Eritrea's information minister, announced the historic event on Twitter "President Isaias Afwerki & Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed today officially opened the Debay Sima - Burre border point between the two countries for road transport connectivity," Meskel wrote, referring to the Eritrean president and Ethiopian prime minister respectively.

The Secretary-General welcomes the visit to Djibouti on 6 September by the Ministers for Horn of Africa of Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia, joining Djibouti's Foreign Minister, as another important step in the rapprochement among the countries in the Horn of Africa region. The agreement reached among the four Ministers to work together to restore peace and stability in the region is a positive example for the Horn and beyond.

Renewed violence in the Oromia and SNNP regions of Ethiopia has caused the displacement of over one million Ethiopians, who are now in critical need of humanitarian assistance.

The Government of Ethiopia and humanitarian partners require a total of USD 117.7 million to scale up their response to the most recent round of internal displacement.

UNHCR has received USD 7.5 million from CERF for procurement and distribution of non-food items (NFIs) in regions affected by the recent displacement.
