THE AKLDP PROJECT 2014-2018

• The USAID/Ethiopia Agriculture Knowledge, Learning, Documentation and Policy (AKLDP) project was implemented by the Feinstein International Centre (FIC), part of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University. Using their extensive experience in Ethiopia, the FIC ensured that research knowledge in agriculture and related sectors was presented in a format that could be used by farmers, policymakers and development workers.

• At the conclusion of the Deyr/short rains season, there remain large areas of drier-than-normal conditions across Somalia, in parts of eastern and southern Ethiopia, in eastern Kenya, and along the Kenya-Uganda border. However, December rainfall alleviated cumulative deficits in parts of the eastern Horn, bringing short-term but significant relief to pasture and water resources.

Addis Ababa January 02/2019 More than 400,000 compatriots displaced due to conflict along the border areas of Oromia and Somali regions have returned to their localities, according to Oromia Disaster Risk Management Commission.

Oromia Disaster Risk Management Commissioner, Mekonen Lenjisa told ENA that they returned to their former domiciles in Moyale, Borena, Guji, Bale, East and West Hararghe bordering woredas and kebeles.

Southeastern pastoral areas continue to recover from drought in 2016 and 2017 and will remain in Crisis (IPC Phase 3) through at least May 2019.

  • Over the past week, local authorities and humanitarian partners in Gedeo zone (SNNP region) have reported the arrival of over 15 000 displaced ethnic Gedeos originating from Guji zone of Oromiya (Kersha, Hambella Wamena, Birbisa Kojowa woredas). They had been returned to West Guji by the authorities in August, after having fled their homes in April – June due to massive, targeted violence.

  • Renewed fighting in Moyale town and Woreda, Ethiopia, between the Garreh (Somali sub-clan) and the Borenas (Oromi sub-clan) erupted on 10 December, resulting in 30 deaths and many more wounded and causing massive displacement. Damages in Moyale town are heavy, including the hospital (the only referral health structure in town). Several banks and shops were looted. Up to 80,000 people are reported to be displaced over the last 2 weeks but high level of insecurity in the area makes difficult to confirm these numbers.

Introduction

Ethiopia, the second most populous country in Africa, faces a massive internal displacement crisis due to inter-communal violence and conflicts. The displacement crisis started in autumn 2017 and has escalated and spread in the second half of 2018. Meanwhile, there is dramatic political change brought about by the arrival of a new prime minister in 2018, an ongoing refugee influx from South Sudan and Eritrea, and millions of Ethiopians who need emergency food assistance and support to rebuild their livelihoods.

EU announces new humanitarian package for those most in need in Ethiopia

Brussels, 17 December 2018

On an official visit to Ethiopia, Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides has announced today €89 million in humanitarian support for 2018-2019 whilst visiting EU aid projects in the Somali region in Eastern Ethiopia where many people have fled their homes due to internal conflict.
