A Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) rapid assessment of the fierce fighting around the Ethiopian Moyale border and its environs since Thursday 26th July 2012, has revealed that the conflict has caused deaths, injuries and loss of property with reports of massive displacements of populations.

Last week, representatives from the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC), Red Cross/ Red Crescent Societies from the Horn of Africa and all over the world, met in Nairobi with the Secretary General from IGAD, the regional director of the African Development Bank and representatives from the donor community to agree on a way forward to build more resilient communities.

On 4 December 2000, the United Nations General Assembly in Resolution 55/76 decided that, from 2001, 20 June would be celebrated as World Refugee Day. In this resolution, the General Assembly noted that 2001 marked the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees. A refugee is one who has been forced to seek protection/ asylum from harm outside his own Country. Kenya currently hosts the largest refugee camp in the world i.e. the Dadaab Refugee Camp which hosts a total of about 700,000 refugees.

Tension is still evident in Moyale following the Gabra- Borana conflict over political positions and new boundaries as enacted in the New constitution. Some of the displaced families have moved into Ethiopia and Wajir District and as a result, a team from Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) is currently carrying out a detailed assessment in Bute, Gurar and Dasir to determine the number of people displaced so that the Society can assist. According to the elders from both sides, some 300 families have been displaced and are currently in Wajir.

“ We want peace,” that was the message from both the Borana and Garba elders when the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) team from the Eastern Region, KRCS Moyale Branch and the Headquarters in Nairobi, led by the KRCS Secretary General, Abbas Gullet, toured the area for assessment of the impact of the conflict and a reconciliatory message for both the Gabra and the Borana elders.

Nine days after a conflict erupted between the Merille community of Ethiopia and the Turkana community of Kenya, a detailed assessment carried out at Loarengak and Todonyang by a Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) team on 9th May 2011 to assess the situation of those affected and displaced revealed that more than 50 people had lost their lives as a result of the conflict.
