1. EMERGENCY OVERVIEW AND RECENT DEVELOPMENTS
Ethiopia continues to face a major humanitarian crisis.

With signs of some stabilisation occurring in the worst drought affected areas of the country and encouraging moves to peace following the two year conflict with Eritrea, greater opportunities to assist drought- and conflict- affected populations are now appearing. However, supporting drought recovery and conflict rehabilitation will continue to place considerable demands on the capacities and resources of UNICEF and other aid actors in the coming months.

Nairobi August 03, 2000. UNICEF Kenya has accelerated and intensified programmes in health, nutrition, water, and sanitation to prevent vulnerable children and women in drought affected parts of Kenya from falling victim to infectious and water-borne diseases, such as Kala Azar and cholera that have broken out in Kenya recently. Thus, UNICEF is pre-positioning essential drugs, water purification materials, water equipment and parts, and supplementary food in Turkana immediately. Other drought affected areas will also be supplied this month.
