A SNAPSHOT OF EVENTS IN THE ASIA-PACIFIC

Between May and September 2011, a number of disasters including floods and storms continued to devastate Asia and the Pacific region.

Floods occurred in China from June onwards, affecting over 36 million people and killing at least 355 people. Despite direct economic losses of nearly US$6.5 billion, no international assistance was requested.

We need to get used to the idea that modern technologies are reaching and affecting not only researchers and agencies but even the displaced and uprooted themselves. In fact it may be the agencies which – despite their own use of technology – need to catch up with the importance of technology in the lives of displaced people. Technology can have a transformative effect for displaced people and for their relationships to governments, the agencies, the diaspora and each other.

World Humanitarian Day has been celebrated by over 40 countries worldwide on 19 August since 2009. The day was chosen to commemorate the death of 22 humanitarian workers who, in 2003, were killed when the UN Office in Iraq was bombed.

Among those killed was Sergio Viera de Mello, the UN’s High Commissioner for Human Rights and Special Representative of the Secretary-General to Iraq. His widow, who set up the Sergio Viera de Mello Foundation, fought for 19 August to be recognised as World Humanitarian Day.

In response to the Great East Japan Earthquake, the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia made a donation of 5,445,215.55 birr (approximately 25 million yen) as relief money for Japan. The hand-over ceremony was held on Thursday, June 23 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Addis Ababa, attended by H.E. Mr. Hailemariam Desalegn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and H.E. Mr. Hiroyuki Kishino, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Ethiopia.

Highlights

- The food security situation in Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia is acute and deteriorating. The crop harvest of the main season is about 15 per cent lower than the historical average. This comes on the back of more than three consecutive droughts which have decimated crop production and pasture in most arid and semi-arid areas. The overall situation is further aggravated by growing conflicts. The number of affected people is estimated at more than 20 million.

- Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM) rates are increasing, reaching alarming levels.

As the second semester of 2008 begins, the World Food Programme continues to focus its attention on the more than 81 million beneficiaries requiring food assistance. The total cost of 2008 activities is just over US$4.78 billion. Considering carry-over stocks and resources mobilized so far in 2008, and considering US$1 billion for prepositioning of food stocks for 2009, the total shortfall at this time of the year is US$2.71 billion.
