Between January and August 2018, 36,185 refugees arrived in Ethiopia, mostly from South Sudan and Eritrea.

UNHCR delivers lifesaving assistance to respond to the increased Eritrean influx following the reopening of the border between Ethiopia and Eritrea.

Ethiopia is experiencing an increase in the number of internally displaced people. In total, over 2.8 million people in Ethiopia are currently internally displaced.

UNHCR enhances registration data and has frozen refugee figures as of 31 August 2018.
Hence all figures in this Operation Update are as of August 2018.

OVERVIEW

MIGRANT BASELINE

The 21th round of data collection took place in July and August 2018. During this round a revised version of the data collection methodology was used to capture additional information on the needs and challenges migrants are facing.

DTM identified there to be at least 669,176 migrants in Libya. Migrants were identified in all baladiyas, within 554 communities and originated from more than 41 countries.

The 2017 Sudan Participatory Assessment, conducted between October and December 2017, involved 6,009 Persons of Concern to UNHCR engaged through some 385 semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, individual interviews and participatory observation sessions. This assessment exercise was conducted by UNHCR in collaboration with partners, actively supported by the Government of Sudan, to engage refugees, asylum-seekers and refugee returnees – women, men, girls and boys of di fferent age, gender, nationality and ability – to identify their needs and examine ways to address them.

Ethiopia is host to the second largest refugee population in Africa, sheltering over 928,663 registered refugees and asylum seekers as of 31 July 2018.

So far in 2018, 34,509 refugees arrived in Ethiopia, including 2,032 in July. They are mostly from South Sudan and Eritrea.

UNHCR is actively participating in the humanitarian response to the IDP situation in Ethiopia and has deployed two Emergency Response Teams to Gedeo and West Guji. The teams are supporting the authorities with site management and the co-ordination of responses to protection needs.

Kharaz camp was opened in 2001 and remains the only refugee camp in Yemen. The vast majority of the population are Somali refugees.
The camp is located in Lahj Governorate, where average temperatures in summer exceed 40° Celsius. UNHCR maintains a Field Office in Kharaz.
Since August 2017, UNHCR has been supporting Yemeni authorities to conduct a verification exercise of refugees living in Kharaz camp.

• In response to the cyclone Sagar in May, UNICEF distributed Immediate Response WASH and dignity kits benefitting 700 affected households (including IDPs and surrounding host community) in Damerjog, an IDP site located just outside Djibouti;

• Over the reporting period, 842 people in drought affected areas gained access to adequate sanitation;

ECW Annual Results Report: Over 650,000 Children Reached in the Fund’s First Year of Operations

New York, 6 July 2018 – The just-released ECW annual results report shows ECW’s investments have reached more than 650,000 children and youth affected by conflict and natural disasters during the Fund’s first year of operations from April 2017 to March 2018. In total ECW invested US$82 million in 14 crisis-affected countries.

During the first six months of 2018, 32,477 refugees arrived in Ethiopia, including 3,266 in June. They include 19,195 refugees from South Sudan and almost 12,000 from Eritrea.

World Refugee Day 2018 was commemorated on 20 June in the capital Addis Ababa as well as in the 26 refugee camps across the five Regional States hosting refugees.
