  • Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General for the Humanitarian Crisis in the Horn of Africa visits Eritrea from 31 March - 2 April 2004.

  • The 23rd meeting of the Military Coordination Commission (MCC) was held on 15 March 2004 in Nairobi.

  • Eighty-one Eritrean civilians were repatriated from Ethiopia on 19 March 2004 under the auspices of ICRC.

  • From 11 - 26 March 2004 some 2,704 Eritrean refugees were repatriated home from Sudan.

ASMARA, 28th August 2002: At a critical moment when the country has been striving to overcome the caseload of a complex humanitarian situation that resulted from the border conflict with Ethiopia and natural calamities over the last four years, Eritrea is faced by another year of severe and extensive spell of drought. This is seriously threatening the survival of people and livestock across the country.

  • UN Under Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations Mr. Jean-Marie Guehenno visits Eritrea.

  • 7th Tripartite Meeting (UNHCR, COR, ERREC) held in Geneva. Number of Eritreans repatriated since May 2001 has passed the 50,000 mark.

  • The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) assisted the repatriation of in 168 civilian Eritreans from Ethiopia to Eritrea.

  • More than 5,000 IDPs relocated from Korokon to Kotobia and Shambouko.

  • The Eritrea-Ethiopia Border Commission (EEBC) announced its verdict on the delimitation of the border between the two countries on 13 April 2002.

  • The Eritrean and Ethiopian United Nations Country Teams met together in Ethiopia from 21-22 March 2002 to discuss humanitarian and development assistance activities to support peace building and reconciliation efforts;

  • 7,697 IDPs in camps in Debub region have returned to their home villages in Tsorona sub-zone.

  • ICRC has repatriated 524 civilian Ethiopians from Eritrea to Ethiopia during the month of September 2001.

  • UNMEE is facilitating ways to return 43,995 IDPs living in camps to their home villages.

  • Information campaign has started in Port Sudan and other refugee camps in Sudan on 23 September 2001 to restart repatriation of 41,000 Eritrean refugees until the end of the year.

A two-day Workshop facilitated by UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) was held at Embasoira Hotel on 26-27 July 2001 to pave way for the Consolidated Appeal Process (CAP-2002). IDPs movement and repatriation of Eritrean refugees from Sudan has slowed down. So far around 170,000 IDPs have returned to their home villages and about 69,975 IDPs are staying in the existing and newly established temporary camps until their home areas are safe. Between 12 May and 8 July 2001, 20,907 Eritrean refugees returned home from Sudan with the assistance of UNHCR.

On 8 June 2001, General Humanitarian Co-ordination meeting was held at Selam Hotel where representatives from ERREC, UN agencies, Red Cross movement and NGOs attended. Main development during the month is the continued repatriation of refugees from Sudan and return of IDPs to their home village in the TSZ.


19 Dec 2000 description

A peace agreement has been signed between Eritrea and Ethiopia bringing to an end the two-year border dispute. Increasingly attention needs to be paid to drought affected areas which are clearly wider than just three administrative zones.
