2014 SUMMARIZED

Dorcas takes action to help people in need and deep poverty irrespective of their religion, ethnicity, gender or political convictions. Inspired by Matthew 25:31-46 to care for the poor and oppressed, Dorcas has been working for 35 years to provide relief and development projects in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa. For this it can count on the enthusiasm of thousands of volunteers, entrepreneurs and donors in the Netherlands.

SUMMARY

The Desert Locust (SGR1 ) situation deteriorated along the Red Sea coast in the central outbreak region during November. Aerial and ground operations treated swarms and groups of adults and hoppers on close to 83,000 ha in Sudan during this month. A few adult locusts were detected on the Gulf of Aden & the Red Sea coastal plains in Yemen the last week of November. No locusts were reported in Ethiopia, Oman or Somalia and no reports were received from Eritrea or Saudi Arabia during this period (DLCO-EA, DLMCC/Yemen, LCC/Oman, PPD/Sudan).

  • The Arab Republic of Egypt is a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention and its 1967 Protocol, as well as the 1969 OAU Convention. As the country has, however, not yet developed national asylum procedures and institutions, the functional responsibilities for all aspects of registration, documentation and refugee status determination (RSD) are carried out by UNHCR under the 1954 Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Egypt.

Addis Ababa November 03/2014 Ethiopia and Egypt have signed 5 agreements that expand their collaborations in various spheres.

The areas of agreements are education, technical training, trade cooperation, health, women affairs, and capacity building in diplomacy.

The agreements were signed by Ethiopian Foreign Minister Tewodros Adhanom and his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry who took part in the 5th Ethio-Egypt Joint Ministerial Commission Meeting.

After a rainy season lull, South Sudan’s warring parties are preparing for major offensives with the Sudan People’s Liberation Army-In Opposition (SPLA-IO) this week launching attacks on Bentiu, capital of oil-producing Unity state (see our recent Conflict Alert). Hardliners in the government and the SPLA-IO appear determined to settle the conflict through war.

The Humanitarian Compendium charts the humanitarian needs and strategic priorities of IOM in more than 30 countries for 2014, as coordinated at the inter-agency level, and reflected in Inter-Agency Response Plans and IOM Appeals. The Humanitarian Compendium will be updated on a rolling basis to reflect changes in requirements and funding received.

SUMMARY

The Desert Locust (SGR1 ) situation remained calm in September in summer breeding areas in the western outbreak region. Only a few adults and hoppers were reported in Mauritania, Niger and Chad. A similar situation may be present in northern Mali where surveys were not possible.
Algeria, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia remained calm during this month.

The U.S. expanded its aerial campaign against Islamic State (IS) militants in late September with strikes in Syria’s north and east. The operation, which targets both IS and fighters linked to al-Qaeda’s central leadership and the affiliated group Jabhat al-Nusra, risks alienating other rebel groups in Syria and strengthening support for IS.

Libye - L’OIM est préoccupée par l’insécurité croissante qui touche plus de 200 000 migrants qui vivent et travaillent à Tripoli, à Misurata et à Benghazi en Libye. Parmi eux, 7000 personnes sont particulièrement vulnérables et ont besoin d’une aide d’urgence pour être évacués.

D’après les autorités, près de 150 000 habitants (soit 31 000 familles) de Tripoli ont fui les combats qui font rage depuis deux mois dans la capitale.

IOM Libya is monitoring the growing insecurity of some 200,000 overseas migrants living and working in Tripoli, Misrata and Benghazi. They include some 7,000 individuals IOM categorizes as “vulnerable migrants” in urgent need of evacuation assistance.

Nearly 150,000 Tripoli residents made homeless by two months of ever-intensifying conflict – almost 31,000 families – have fled the city, according to the local authorities.

The fight for control of Libya between the Misrata-led Islamist-leaning coalition and the Zintan-led forces is escalating by the day. Hundreds have been killed and thousands displaced in over six weeks of clashes and heavy artillery fire. The Misrata side emerged victorious in the battle over Tripoli’s international airport, taking control of the capital, and made advances around Benghazi, but the larger political divide remains unresolved.
