The main document analyses, "How to Transform a Social Norm," is a three-part reflection on Phase II (2014-2018).

Foreword from the Regional Director

Welcome to the August edition of the UN Migration Agency Bulletin for the East and Horn of Africa.
Like in many parts of the globe, migration continues to dominate debates in our region. On 6 August, IOM and its partners, launched a Regional Migrant Response Plan for the Horn of Africa and Yemen appealing to the international community for USD 45 million. It is the first of such plan to be launched ever.

Nairobi – IOM, the UN Migration Agency, and its partners launched, on 6 August, a Regional Migrant Response Plan (RMRP) for the Horn of Africa and Yemen through which they are appealing to the international community for USD 45 million. The plan details support to migrants on the move in the Horn of Africa and Yemen from 2018 to 2020.

Our region has much to celebrate after the historic breakthrough in Ethiopia and Eritrea relations. The signing of a Joint Declaration of Peace and Friendship by the leaders of the two countries, and the subsequent restoration of air services and phone links, we hope, will lead to the free movement of people across their borders.

In South Sudan, IOM, Partners Vaccination Campaigns Reach over 144,000 People in March

During March IOM and partners vaccinated over 144,000 people. In Malakal and Wau nearly 60,400 people received oral cholera vaccine, whilst in Aweil East, 83,700 children were reached with measles vaccination.

Children are extremely vulnerable to outbreaks of measles and other contagious diseases, particularly in areas such as Aweil East where health conditions are further compromised by severe food insecurity and poor living conditions.

  • The operational context during February was marked mainly by small-scale attacks, evictions, drought and the drying up the Shabelle river.
  • Consequently, February witnessed a slight increase in displacements, in cases of Acute Watery Diarrhoea (AWD)/Cholera, and severe water shortages.
  • Monitoring agencies reported that food security improved but in the absence of assistance food security would deteriorate significantly.

Bringing TB diagnosis and treatment into Djibouti's refugee camps to ensure no one is left behind

Djibouti hosts more than 27,000 refugees from neighbouring countries, equivalent to roughly 3% of its population. With one of the highest densities of refugees in the world, crowded camps create a fertile breeding ground for the transmission of tuberculosis (TB).

Migration Response Centers (MRCs) are service orientated facilities responding to the needs of migrants on the move. Working collaboratively, MRCs bring together key partners to facilitate the identification of migrants in vulnerable situations, and to ensure that they receive appropriate immediate and longer-term support. MRCs fill critical gaps in providing direct assistance, including food and shelter, to migrants along key migration routes, such as in transit countries and at border points.
