Today, 19 June 2016, we commemorate the first International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict. It is a date set aside, to raise awareness on the need for collective action, to condemn and to end conflict-related sexual violence – which has been used as a weapon of war – inflicting immense physical and psychological injuries on women and children who continue to bear the brunt of the various conflicts on our continent.

December 10, 2014 Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: In commemoration of the second year anniversary of the entry into force of the Kampala Convention, The Department of Political Affairs of the African Union Commission in partnership with the Internal Displacement Monitoring Center (IDMC) of the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) ­ Liaison Office with the AU, successfully concluded a two and half day training workshop on National Responsibility to protect IDPs. The training workshop took place in the African Union headquarters from 8th ­10th of December 2014.

Lagos, Nigeria 1st December, 2014 – About two hundred and fifty health volunteers from Nigeria to be deployed to Ebola affected countries under the framework of the African Union Support to Ebola Outbreak in West Africa (ASEOWA), have commenced pre deployment training as part of the protocol before deployment. The contingent was assembled by the Federal Government of Nigeria in response to the appeal made by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma in October for Member States to contribute health personnel to join the fight against Ebola.

Kampala, Uganda 19 October 2009 - Through the National Policy for Internally Displaced Persons, Uganda has resettled 2.1 million Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) since 2002. "The remaining 413 000 are gradually returning home on a voluntary basis".

These were the words of Ugandan Prime Minister Professor Apolo R Nsibambi at the opening of the Extraordinary Session of the AU Executive Council being held in Kampala, Uganda from 19 till 20 October 2009.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The AU Heads of State and Government adopted the Abuja Declarations and Plans of Action in 2000 and 2001, committing themselves to intensifying the fight against HIV/AIDS, TB, Malaria and other infectious diseases (ORID). At their Abuja Special Summit of May 2006, they reaffirmed these pledges and committed themselves to scaling up action towards universal access to HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria services BY 2010. As was requested, the AU Commission, in collaboration with WHO and UNAIDS, prepared the 2-year Progress Report on the status of implementation in 2008.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Over the years, many targets have been adopted to reverse the challenge posed by TB globally and Africa in particular. As was requested by Heads of State and Government, the Status Report on TB was prepared with the support of WHO and submitted to the Special Session of Ministers of Health, in Geneva, May 2009.

The 2008 Report had expressed concern that "despite the progress in tuberculosis control, northern African countries have failed in achieving the global targets for tuberculosis control.

  1. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) is the largest, internationally-coordinated public health effort in history. Since 1988 when the GPEI was launched, the GPEI has reduced the global incidence of polio by more than 99%. As a result, indigenous poliovirus has been eliminated from all countries except four countries: India, Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Polio is on the verge of eradication. However, many countries continue to experience re-infections that result in polio outbreaks.
