Impact of Food Prices Rises On Malnutrition and Food Security
- International food and oil prices soared until further in 2008 and translated in varying degrees into higher domestic food prices causing food riots in over 30 countries. Even though food prices are falling on the global markets, surveillance showed that local prices have continued to increase or have remained at their inflated level in a number of vulnerable countries.
Bednets delivered by UKaid have prevented more than 80,000 child deaths in the developing world, Douglas Alexander announced today.
In all, 14.6 million bednets have been provided so far and another 2.7 million are currently on their way some of the world's poorest countries.
With just one year to go, today's announcement means the UK is on track to meet the pledge the Prime Minister made in 2008 to deliver over 20 million bed nets by the end of 2010 to help prevent 110,000 child deaths.

Each week, the World Health Organization Health Action in Crises in Geneva produces information highlights on critical health-related activities in countries where there are humanitarian crises. Drawing on the various WHO programmes, contributions cover activities from field and country offices and the support provided by WHO regional offices and headquarters. The mandate of the WHO departments specifically concerned with Emergency and Humanitarian Action in Crises is to increase the effectiveness of the WHO contribution to crisis preparedness and response, transition and recovery.
The South Sudan Assistant representative of the United Nations High Commission for Refugee (UNHCR), Geoff Wordley, said that over three hundred thousand South Sudanese Refugees have been repatriated to the South for the forthcoming elections and the Referendum process. Speaking to Miraya FM, Wordley said that the figures of southern Sudanese refugees in Uganda, Kenya, and Ethiopia have been reduced. He said that the remaining refugees will be repatriated early next year.

The humanitarian situation in Sudan remains complex and dynamic, with wide variations in vulnerability and needs. Overall, the country continues to move towards peace and recovery, but formidable challenges persist. Recent political advancements have not always translated into better lives for local people, and millions of Sudanese still live in extremely vulnerable conditions.
The latest update from the UNHCR reported about 112,000 displaced people who fled from the conflict in Dongo, North East DRC in the province of Equateur, 74,000 of these displaced people are in Congo. While there are at least four distinct thematic areas addressed by articles in Field Exchange 37, there is arguably one cross-cutting issue - namely the tendency towards fragmentation and lack of coordination within the emergency nutrition sector. We will return to this later. This issue of Field Exchange carries a number of research summaries related to the role of data and indicators in emergencies.

I have just returned from Eastern Sudan which, as you know, is the centre of one of the longest standing refugee situations in Africa. The East epitomizes this country's long history of hosting refugees. It is a tribute to both the Government of Sudan and the people of the Eastern region, who share land and natural resources with refugees who have nowhere else to go.
I visited Wad Sharifey, Shagarab and Kilo 26 refugee camps.
DAKAR, 24 November 2009 (IRIN) - It would take US$8.8 billion annually over several years to halve the number of malnourished children worldwide, currently at some 178 million, says Save the Children in a new eight-point action plan.
