Ces actions répondent à la mise en garde lancée le 9 octobre dernier par l'Organisation mondiale de la Santé.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is launching meningitis prevention activities in 14 countries in Africa to get ready for what could be one of the worst meningitis epidemics in a decade. The move came as a reaction to the warning given by the World Health Organization on October 9.

The first indications of an epidemic could appear as early as February-March 2008.

Each week, the World Health Organization Health Action in Crises in Geneva produces information highlights on critical health-related activities in countries where there are humanitarian crises. Drawing on the various WHO programmes, contributions cover activities from field and country offices and the support provided by WHO regional offices and headquarters. The mandate of the WHO departments specifically concerned with Emergency and Humanitarian Action in Crises is to increase the effectiveness of the WHO contribution to crisis preparedness and response, transition and recovery.

Assessments and Events

- Recent assessments show that the humanitarian crisis caused by Cyclone Sidr may be worse than previously believed. The total number of people affected by the cyclone is around 8.5 million, or 1.5 million more than initially thought. OCHA reports that about 2.6 million people across nine districts need emergency assistance.

- As of 30 November, 3274 people were reported dead and 12 979 injured.

ADDIS ABABA, 5 December 2007 (IRIN) - Strengthening the security institutions in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is a prerequisite for long-term solutions to the country's problems, the US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice told the media in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

Rice met the Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame as well as the DRC Foreign Affairs Minister, Mbusa Nyamwisi, to discuss the problems of the Great Lakes region.

ERC's visit to CEA region

The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator (ERC) John Holmes visited Ethiopia, Sudan, Somalia and Kenya during an eight-day regional mission. Mr. Holmes arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 26 November and travelled to Jijiga and Kebridehar in the Ogaden region where over 640,000 people require urgent humanitarian assistance.
