Between 1 January and 30 June 2017, 83,752 persons arrived in Italy by sea. This is a 19% increase compared to sea arrivals in the same period last year (70,222). In June, 23,524 persons reached Italian shores, compared to 22,371 who arrived in June 2016.

This weekly bulletin focuses on selected acute public health emergencies occurring in the WHO African Region. WHO AFRO is currently monitoring 39 events: three Grade 3, six Grade 2, six Grade 1, and 24 ungraded events.

This week’s edition covers key ongoing events in the region, including the grade 3 humanitarian crises in South Sudan and Ethiopia and outbreaks of hepatitis E in the Lake Chad Basin (Chad, Niger and Nigeria), malaria in Burundi, dengue fever in Côte d’Ivoire, and visceral leishmaniasis in Kenya.

Rainfall deficits persist over Kenya and Uganda

  1. Below-average rainfall since mid-May has led to abnormal dryness across eastern Uganda and southwestern Kenya. Moisture deficits are likely to negatively impact cropping and Pastoral activities.

  2. Torrential rain led to destroyed houses in Central Darfur, Sudan. Heavy rain is forecast to continue during the next week. High flooding risks in the region continue.

Executive Summary

Insecurity, economic crisis, abuse and exploitation in Libya push refugees and migrants to Europe, new study reveals.

A study of mixed refugee and migrant flows by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has found that around half of those travelling to Libya do so believing they can find jobs there, but end up fleeing onwards to Europe to escape life-threatening insecurity, instability, difficult economic conditions plus widespread exploitation and abuse.

The Migration Country Profiles project aspires to contribute to a better understanding of migratory trends across Africa and the Middle East towards Europe. The project focuses specifically on the 2016 top-ten countries of origin of migrants and six key countries of transit that migrants are likely to take before embarking on the Mediterranean or Aegean sea journeys.

The profiles take particular consideration the push factors of migration, including human rights, conflict, and development contexts of each country of origin and transit.

Overview

Between 1 January and 31 May 2017, 60,228 persons arrived in Italy by sea. This is a 26% increase compared to sea arrivals in the same period last year (47,883). Trends in sea arrivals should be assessed over time, as fluctuations on a monthly basis may be linked to various factors, including weather and sea conditions or the situation in the countries of departure and origin. Geopolitical developments and the capacity of smugglers to organize departures may also affect sea arrivals.

Rainfall continues over most of West Africa and northern East Africa

  1. Below-average rainfall since late February has resulted in moisture deficits throughout many parts of southern South Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia, and northern Tanzania.

  2. Limited rainfall since March has led to developing moisture deficits across parts of Liberia, Cote d’Ivoire, and southern Guinea.
