Ethiopia, Namibia, and Cote D’Ivoire have been selected as the first three countries for the implementation of a new project on quality education through teacher training supported by UNESCO and the Government of China.

This initiative marks the beginning of a new partnership: it is the first time UNESCO has received financial support in this area from China.

Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, launched the project on 22 November at the close of the 2012 Global EFA Meeting (GEM).

In September, UNHCR Libya renewed the documents of 170 refugees and asylum seekers. With the closure of Al Wafa’s Office in Gargarish, renewal activities are now taking place in UNHCR’s office. In terms of voluntary repatriation, 12 family and 2 individuals requested assistance to return to Iraq. In September, UNHCR conducted a number of monitoring visits to assess protection needs of persons of concern in detention centres in Libya (see box on the right). Furthermore the office in Tripoli set up an information telephone hot-line for refugees and asylum seekers.

1) Both anomalous seasonal rainfall and the northward position of the Inter-Tropical front during the past several months have favored breeding conditions for desert locusts over southeast Mauritania-western Mali, central Niger-eastern Mali, Chad, and east-central Sudan. With seasonal rains ending and as vegetation dries out, locusts are expected to concentrate and migrate towards the north as well as potentially into cropping areas in Mali and Niger.

The continuation of above-average rainfall during September could lead to locust outbreak across many regions.

1) Strong easterly wave activity across West Africa is expected to enhance precipitation amounts during the next week, which may trigger localized flooding over parts of eastern Guinea, southeastern Senegal, and border areas of Mali and Cote d’Ivoire. Continued oversaturation of ground conditions in Guinea also heightens the risk for water-borne diseases outbreaks.

ADDIS ABABA (AlertNet) – In the sprawling estate of Gurara on the outskirts of Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, women farmers are busy working on a two-hectare plot where they grow fruit and vegetables.

The piece of land allocated to the Gurara Women’s Association by the government is a source of income for some 200 city dwellers.
