UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, today warmly welcomed the launch by the International Olympic Committee of the Olympic Refuge Foundation, with the aim of creating safe sport facilities and developing sport activities for refugee, displaced and vulnerable children.
“UNHCR is fully supportive of this excellent initiative, which will improve the life of thousands of displaced and disadvantaged children through sport,” said UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, who attended the official launch in Lima, Peru, and will become the Vice-Chairman of the Foundation.

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has signed an agreement in Geneva with the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) that will make it easier for thousands of refugees across the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Europe to enjoy the Olympic sport and martial art of taekwondo and keep healthy.
The WTF, through a newly created Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation, will provide coaches and equipment for pilot taekwondo programmes already launched in two camps for Syrian refugees – Kilis in Turkey, and Jordan's Za'atari.
The fourth edition of ‘Shelter Projects’, is launched at a time when shelter is more relevant than ever as an instrument of humanitarian response. The case studies in this edition reflect the on-going challenges posed by responses to complex emergencies such as Haiti and Pakistan as well as new challenges derived from unprecedented level of population displacement in Africa, Asia and in the Middle East.
UNHCR releases data for first half 2013 showing sharp rise in forced displacement
UNHCR warned today in a report that 2013 was on track for some of the highest levels of forced displacement ever seen by the agency, due to unusually large numbers of new refugees and internally displaced people. The report said 5.9 million people were forced to flee their homes in the first six months of the year, compared with 7.6 million for all of 2012. The biggest producer of new displacement was Syria.

World Refugee Day: UNHCR report finds 80 per cent of world's refugees in developing countries
GENEVA, June 20 (UNHCR) – A UNHCR report released today reveals deep imbalance in international support for the world's forcibly displaced, with a full four-fifths of the world's refugees being hosted by developing countries – and at a time of rising anti-refugee sentiment in many industrialized ones.
The number of people who have been displaced within their own countries as a result of armed conflict now stands at approximately 26 million. UNHCR, with its long record of protecting and assisting the displaced, is well positioned to support national and international responses towards internally displaced persons (IDPs). As of 2008, the Office was active in some 28 IDP operations involving approximately 14 million people.
