Impact of Food Prices Rises On Malnutrition and Food Security

- International food and oil prices soared until further in 2008 and translated in varying degrees into higher domestic food prices causing food riots in over 30 countries. Even though food prices are falling on the global markets, surveillance showed that local prices have continued to increase or have remained at their inflated level in a number of vulnerable countries.

BRUSSELS - The Government of Belgium has announced a new €10.6 million (US$ 15.9 million) contribution to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), capping a record year in which it donated a total of €26 million (US$ 37.6 million) to help fight hunger worldwide.

Belgium's 2009 donation is its largest-ever donation to WFP - more than 50 per cent higher than in 2008, when it contributed €18 million (US$ 24.7 million).

"Belgium has shown great solidarity with those who are less fortunate.

Overall, the country continues to move towards peace and recovery, but formidable challenges persist. Recent political advancements have not always translated into better lives for local people, and millions of Sudanese still live in extremely vulnerable conditions.

The latest update from the UNHCR reported about 112,000 displaced people who fled from the conflict in Dongo, North East DRC in the province of Equateur, 74,000 of these displaced people are in Congo. The Political situation in Guinea experienced some turbulence following the shooting of the country's President last week. Pandemic A (H1N1): As of 07th December 2009; Twenty nine (29) countries have reported confirmed cases with a total case load of 16,031 and 115 deaths.

Thirty-one food insecure nations need emergency assistance

Rome, 10 November 2009 - Food prices in poor countries that are net importers of food still remain stubbornly high despite a good 2009 world cereal production, FAO warned today in its latest Crop Prospects and Food Situation report.

The report was published ahead of the Rome World Summit on Food Security to be held in Rome on November 16-18.

Critical food insecurity is affecting 31 countries and they therefore require emergency assistance.

Banjul, November 8, 2009 - At the Third Conference of African National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) which started, today, Sunday, 8 November 2009, in Banjul, Republic of Gambia, representatives of National Human Rights Institutions have shared experiences, challenges and opportunities with a view to improving capacity building and enhancing or reinforcing their mandates.

On challenges, the representatives of the NHRIs agreed that funding and staffing levels had an effect on their work.
