The South Sudan Assistant representative of the United Nations High Commission for Refugee (UNHCR), Geoff Wordley, said that over three hundred thousand South Sudanese Refugees have been repatriated to the South for the forthcoming elections and the Referendum process. Speaking to Miraya FM, Wordley said that the figures of southern Sudanese refugees in Uganda, Kenya, and Ethiopia have been reduced. He said that the remaining refugees will be repatriated early next year.

The humanitarian situation in Sudan remains complex and dynamic, with wide variations in vulnerability and needs. Overall, the country continues to move towards peace and recovery, but formidable challenges persist. Recent political advancements have not always translated into better lives for local people, and millions of Sudanese still live in extremely vulnerable conditions.

The East and Central Africa region encompasses the Horn of Africa, as well as the Great Lakes region, including Burundi, Chad, the Central African Republic(CAR), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, the Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.

Pandemic A (H1N1): Twenty nine (29) countries are now affected in our Region with a total case load of 14,950 and 103 deaths as of 16th November 2009 but the overall decline in incidence continues. Other humanitarian concerns include political crises in Guinea and Niger, disease outbreaks, the complex emergencies in central African countries and the food crises in the horn of Africa.

Twenty seven (27) countries are now affected in our Region with a total case load of 13,583 and 102 deaths. Floods in West Africa which affected 635,273 people and killed 187 others are subsiding but we continue to monitor the health consequences.

Regional Displacement Summary

At the end of September 2009, there were 10,188,709 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in 10 out of 18 countries in the East and Central Africa region. This represents a net increase of 1,084,383 IDPs within the last six months.

Countries with ongoing massive internal displacements include the Democratic Republic of Congo (2.12 million), Sudan (4 million) and Somalia (1.55 million).
