Executive summary

Large-scale migration to Europe has precipitated a paradigm shift in relations between the European Union (EU) and the government of Sudan, and closer ties between both entities. This new partnership has resulted in the EU disbursing millions of euros to the Sudanese government for technical equipment and training efforts geared toward stopping the flow to Europe of migrants from Sudan and those from Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, and other countries in sub-Saharan Africa who come through Sudan.

17 Nov 2014 description

The number of people in need of humanitarian assistance has risen by half a million to 6.6 million people in the period between November 2013 and October 2014. These 6.6 million people in need consist of 3.1 million IDPs, 0.7 million refugees, and asylum seekers, 1.2 million malnourished children aged under five and 1.6 million people who are food insecure. Needs are greatest in the Darfur region, Southern Sudan (South Kordofan, West Kordofan and Blue Nile States) and Eastern Sudan.

30 Sep 2014 description

This is in addition to some 6.1 million people who required humanitarian assistance at the start of 2014. These new humanitarian needs have primarily been generated by the displacement of over 400,000 people in Darfur, the arrival of almost 100,000 refugees from South Sudan and alarming levels of malnutrition, with the GAM rate for Sudan exceeding the 15% emergency threshold.

An estimated 6.9 million people need humanitarian assistance in Sudan. Most are in Darfur, where at least 2.4 million people are internally displaced. In the first half of 2014, an additional 399,000 people have been displaced following hostilities.
