UNICEF launches USD 1.4 billion appeal in response to most extreme crises
GENEVA, 7 March 2011 - UNICEF released the Humanitarian Action for Children Report (HAC) 2011 today, requesting $1.4 billion in its annual appeal to donors to assist children and women caught in the throes of crises.

InterAction is pleased to release its second Foreign Assistance Briefing Book (FABB). The book outlines the U.S.-based international nonprofit community's views on foreign assistance challenges expected to be at the forefront of the 112th Congress and the remaining two years of the Obama administration's first term.
Sixteen key areas and sectors are featured, including climate change, food security and agriculture, health, urban poverty and U.S. government funding trends, with specific problems highlighted and suggested recommendations.

Education is a key factor in restoring normalcy and hope and in providing physical, psychosocial and cognitive protection in emergency situations.
However, few donors have humanitarian policies that explicitly include education from the onset of a humanitarian response.
This book gives an overview of the policies, strategies and financial commitments of the 23 influential Western donors that constitute the OECD in relation to education in fragile and conflictaffected states.
This third annual Last in Line, Last in School report examines recent trends in donor support for education for children living in conflict-affected fragile states (CAFS) and those caught up in emergencies. Its broad conclusion is that, although donors have increased their focus on meeting the education needs of children in these countries and situations, there is still a long way to go.
WFP is deeply concerned that the scourge of hunger and malnutrition is on the increase across the developing world, with now over a billion hungry people on the planet. The global economic downturn is exacerbating the impact of the food crisis and increasing food insecurity for the world's most vulnerable people, reversing progress toward the Millennium Development Goals.

Dear Sisters and Brothers,
As we come to the close of this interactive dialogue on access to education in emergency situations, I want to thank all of you for deepening our understanding of the complexities of this issue.
(Sarajevo, 12 March 2009) Today, top peace negotiators and education experts joined representatives of governments and the United Nations at a unique summit to examine how quality education can be prioritised in peace processes, and become a reality for all children living in conflict-affected countries.
Nobel Peace Prize winners Desmond Tutu, Mairead Maguire and Rigoberta Menchu addressed the conference via video link to lend their support and energy to the attendees.
Tutu declared, "Nothing can be more unjust than denying children their right to education.
Asia and the Pacific
Problem Statement/Context: The Asia Pacific region has an emergency profile characterized by a combination of natural disasters, civil/political unrest with pockets of conflict situations, and recent emerging new global threats such as high food and fuel prices crisis, the threat of pandemic influenza and other emerging diseases.

In its resolution 60/124 of December 2005, the General Assembly of the United Nations sought to remedy two problems that had bedevilled UN efforts to deliver humanitarian assistance in a timely and effective manner.
In 2007, natural and man-made disasters continued to take a toll on the lives of people.
Thirty-seven million children living in conflict-affected fragile states remain out of school, denied their right to education and the opportunity to lift themselves and their communities out of an endless cycle of poverty and conflict. With the capacity of their governments weakened, and education systems destroyed as the result of years of conflict and crisis, these children face a bleak future unless external support is forthcoming.
Funding Trends and Their Impact on Operations
As at 15 January 2008, WFP's total needs to feed the 70 million people currently targeted for food assistance in 2008 are estimated to be over US$3.6 billion.
