The CEA region faces the greatest level of humanitarian need anywhere in the world.
Somalia - Displacement continues amid ongoing hostilities
Intensified fighting broke out in Mogadishu on October 27th, aggravating an already precarious humanitarian situation.
The UN and Partners 2008 Work Plan for Sudan outlines Humanitarian, Early Recovery and Recovery and Development programmes to improve the well being of Sudanese. In Volume I planning, monitoring, coordination and funding issues related to the implementation of these programmes are detailed. Funding Trends and Their Impact on Operations
As at 18 December 2007, WFP’s total needs to feed the 83 million people currently targeted for food assistance in 2007 are estimated to be over US$3.4 billion. As 2007 is coming to an end, country offices are now pre-positioning for 2008 requirements.

The 1996 UN report "The Impact of Armed Conflict on Children", widely known as the Machel study, for the first time brought the issues faced by children in armed conflict to international attention. Ten years later, a strategic review has now been convened to assess progress and look forward to identify key challenges and priorities for the future of the Children and Armed Conflict Agenda.

ERC's visit to CEA region
The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator (ERC) John Holmes visited Ethiopia, Sudan, Somalia and Kenya during an eight-day regional mission. Mr. Holmes arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 26 November and travelled to Jijiga and Kebridehar in the Ogaden region where over 640,000 people require urgent humanitarian assistance.
WASHINGTON, DC - The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) on Wednesday welcomed US$29 million in contributions from the US government in November to assist refugees and other people affected by humanitarian crises in seven African and Asian countries.
"Consistent generosity from the US government enables WFP to reach the most vulnerable people who are struggling each day to feed their families." said Jordan Dey, WFP Director of US Relations.

Each week, the World Health Organization Health Action in Crises in Geneva produces information highlights on critical healthrelated activities in countries where there are humanitarian crises. Drawing on the various WHO programmes, contributions cover activities from field and country offices and the support provided by WHO regional offices and headquarters. The mandate of the WHO departments specifically concerned with Emergency and Humanitarian Action in Crises is to increase the effectiveness of the WHO contribution to crisis preparedness and response, transition and recovery.
