Highlights

Impact of Food Prices Rises On Malnutrition and Food Security

- International food and oil prices soared until further in 2008 and translated in varying degrees into higher domestic food prices causing food riots in over 30 countries. Even though food prices are falling on the global markets, surveillance showed that local prices have continued to increase or have remained at their inflated level in a number of vulnerable countries.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The humanitarian situation in Sudan remains complex and dynamic, with wide variations in vulnerability and needs. Overall, the country continues to move towards peace and recovery, but formidable challenges persist. Recent political advancements have not always translated into better lives for local people, and millions of Sudanese still live in extremely vulnerable conditions.

Chronic conflict, cyclical drought, floods, disease outbreaks, environmental degradation, rapid population growth, and limited government capacity present significant challenges to vulnerable populations in east and central Africa. The East and Central Africa region encompasses the Horn of Africa, as well as the Great Lakes region, including Burundi, Chad, the Central African Republic(CAR), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, the Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.

General Context

Pandemic A (H1N1): The overall decline in incidence continues. Twenty seven (27) countries are now affected in our Region with a total case load of 14,109 and 102 deaths as of 27th October 2009. Other humanitarian concerns include political crises in Guinea and Niger, disease outbreaks, the complex emergencies in central African countries and the food crises in the horn of Africa.

UN Secretary-General appoints new members to CERF Advisory Group

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced the appointment of seven new members of the Advisory Group for the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF).

The members include government officials from countries that have contributed to or received funding from CERF, representatives of humanitarian non-governmental organizations, and academic experts.

Pandemic A (H1N1): The number of confirmed cases has now reached over 8,000 with 40 deaths as of 8th September 2009. South Africa is still accounting for the bulk with 7,606 cases and 31 deaths. Floods in West Africa are retaining the attention of the humanitarian community with more than 600,000 people affected and about 159 deaths in the last three months.

La Banque soutient ainsi la mise en place du Cadre d'action global (CAG).

United Nations aid operations in West Africa have received a boost with the injection of fresh funds to allow humanitarian flights in the region to continue, but similar air services in Chad will have to be cut within three weeks unless donors come forward with more assistance.
