Rainfall deficits persist over Kenya and Uganda

Africa Weather Hazards

  1. Below-average rainfall since mid-May has led to abnormal dryness across eastern Uganda and southwestern Kenya. Moisture deficits are likely to negatively impact cropping and Pastoral activities.

  2. Torrential rain led to destroyed houses in Central Darfur, Sudan. Heavy rain is forecast to continue during the next week. High flooding risks in the region continue.

Substantial rain returned to Uganda and the Lake Victoria region this past week

Africa Weather Hazards

  1. Low and infrequent rainfall since late March has resulted in drought across parts of southeastern Kenya and northeastern Tanzania. The potential for recovery remains unlikely.

Start of season remains slow in parts of West Africa, abnormal dryness continues in Central America and Haiti

Africa Weather Hazards

  1. A delayed onset of the rainy season, followed by poorly-distributed rainfall, has led to abnormal dryness across southern Burkina Faso, the northern parts of Ghana, Togo, and Benin, and north-central Nigeria. The lack of rainfall over the past five weeks has delayed planting and negatively affected cropping activities over many local areas of the region.

Abnormal dryness continues to affect parts of Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Haiti

Africa Weather Hazards

  1. Very poor rainfall since February, combined with six consecutive weeks of virtually no rainfall since midMarch, has led to large moisture deficits and rapidly deteriorating ground conditions in Ethiopia, Djibouti, and eastern Eritrea. The extended mid-season absence of rainfall is likely to adversely affect cropping activities for Belg-producing areas of Ethiopia.
