The United Nations and non-governmental organisations have launched a joint appeal for US$426 million to respond to the drought in the Horn of Africa.

"The Horn of Africa is one of the most food insecure regions in the world with more than 40 per cent of people undernourished. At present millions of people are threatened with starvation following the recent severe drought," stated Jan Egeland, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, who launched the appeal.
