The El Niño 2015-16 in the Context of Past El Niños
The 2015/16 El Niño Event
An El Niño event was officially declared in March 2015, gaining in intensity until it reached its peak in December 2015. The event came to an end in May 2016, becoming one the strongest on record, together with the El Niños of 1982-83 and 1997-98.
ADDIS ABABA – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today received 1,513 metric tons of rice, valued at US$718,000 (more than 13 million Ethiopian birr), from the Government of Brazil to assist refugees living in various camps in Ethiopia.
The handover ceremony, which took place at the WFP warehouse in Nazareth, was attended by representatives from the embassies of Brazil and Norway, from the Administration for Refugee and Returnee Affairs (ARRA) and from the United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR.

Agreement signed with FAO and WFP
21 February 2012, Rome – The Government of Brazil is providing $2 375 000 for a new local food purchase programme to be set up by FAO and the World Food Programme (WFP) to benefit farmers and vulnerable populations in five African countries – Ethiopia, Malawi, Mozambique, Niger and Senegal.
Under an agreement signed here today, Brazil will fund the project, as well as share expertise drawn from its own national Food Purchase Programme (PAA).
We stand at a critical crossroads. At this moment in time we must galvanize all nations, all people, all resources to defeat hunger. Or we can watch helplessly as the first - and most foundational - Millennium Development Goal of halving the percent of poverty and hunger continues to slip out of our grasp.
This is the emergency issue of our generation. Since the food crisis started, the numbers of hungry have increased by almost 200 million people to more than one billion. One in every six people on earth wake up each morning not knowing whether they will have enough to eat.
