We stand at a critical crossroads. At this moment in time we must galvanize all nations, all people, all resources to defeat hunger. Or we can watch helplessly as the first - and most foundational - Millennium Development Goal of halving the percent of poverty and hunger continues to slip out of our grasp.

This is the emergency issue of our generation. Since the food crisis started, the numbers of hungry have increased by almost 200 million people to more than one billion. One in every six people on earth wake up each morning not knowing whether they will have enough to eat.

ActionAid's HungerFREE Scorecard Investigates why a Billion People are Hungry

Executive Summary

Over one billion people - a sixth of humanity - don't have enough to eat. Almost a third of the world's children are growing up malnourished. This is perhaps one of the most shameful achievements of recent history, since there is no good reason for anyone to go hungry in today's world.

Even before the food and financial crises, the number of people facing chronic malnutrition was extremely high, and falling extremely slowly. Since 2005, it has jumped by 20 percent.

Mr. Olivier De Schutter, Special Rapporteur on the right to food

Large-scale land acquisitions and leases: a set of core principles and measures to address human rights challenge

Large-scale acquisitions and leases are one of the key new trends that emerged out of the 2008 global food crisis. Some major food importing capital exporting countries have indeed lost confidence in global markets as a stable and reliable source of food for their national food security. The Special Rapporteur analyses how these investments could have impacts on the right to food.

2008 was a year of major humanitarian challenges. Natural disasters such as Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar, the devastating earthquake in China, flooding in India and Brazil or the hurricanes in the Caribbean once again highlighted the dangers of the unbridled forces of nature. In the complex political crises in Africa, as well as in Afghanistan and Iraq, unresolved conflicts made it impossible to improve the precarious humanitarian situation of people living there.
