Some 25 million people are now internally displaced due to conflicts that have spread since the Cold War, according to a major new survey published this week. Internally displaced people (IDPs) are a huge humanitarian problem; outnumbering conventional refugees by two-to-one and nearly always receiving less protection, says the four-year survey by the Global IDP Project.

The Landmine Update is the International Campaign to Ban Landmines quarterly newsletter. This edition is complemented by a calendar of upcoming events. To date, 145 countries have signed the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty, and 128 have ratified it. The most recent accessions are Comoros (19 September), Afghanistan (11 September), Democratic Republic of Congo (2 May) while recent ratifications include Cameroon (19 September), Angola (5 July) and Suriname (23 May).

In 2001, the Federal Foreign Office Task Force for Humanitarian Aid funded aid projects around the world to a tune of DM 131.6 million (67.1 million euro), representing an increase of 13% on the year 2000. A total of approximately 470 projects were financed, of which 40 projects were concerned with humanitarian demining.

The U.S. National Intelligence Council (NIC) has released a report identifying 20 humanitarian emergencies worldwide, affecting approximately 42 million people. "Global Humanitarian Emergencies: Trends and Projections, 2001-2002" predicts that the international community will continue to respond and provide aid to these countries, but that resources will remain below needs.
