  • There have been 19 497 reported cases of Ebola virus disease, with 7588 reported deaths.

  • Reported case incidence is fluctuating in Guinea and decreasing in Liberia.

  • There are signs that the increase in incidence has slowed in Sierra Leone, although the country’s west is now experiencing the most intense transmission in the affected countries. Response efforts have been strengthened to curb the spread of disease in the area.

La situation socio politique en Côte d'Ivoire a été marquée cette semaine par une explosion de violence dans plusieurs villes du pays. Ceci est le résultat de débats entre l'opposition et le groupe présidentiel suite à la dissolution la semaine dernière du Gouvernement et de la Commission Electorale Indépendante par le Président. L'insécurité à l'est de la RDC n'a pas changé. En plus de cela, on note la persistance des crises habituelles y compris les épidémies.

General Context

The pandemic A (H1N1) has reached a new stage in our Region with the first two deaths reported in South Africa and Mauritius. As of 10th of August 2009 a total of 1,464 cases were reported in 16 African countries. The regional conference organized by the WHO AFRO is taking place in South Africa (11-13 August 2009) to update delegates on the epidemiology of the current pandemic, the processes of national preparedness and response to A (H1N1), develop regional strategies for resource mobilization as well as share experiences among countries.

La Pandémie A (H1N1) a atteint un nouveau stade dans notre Région avec les deux premiers décès en Afrique du Sud et à Maurice. Au 10 août 2009 au total 1 464 cas ont été notifiés dans 16 pays africains. La conférence régionale organisée par l'OMS AFRO se tient en Afrique du Sud (11-13 août 2009) pour mettre à jour les délégués sur l'épidémiologie de la pandémie actuelle, le processus de préparation des pays et la réponse au A (H1N1), développer les stratégies régionales pour la mobilisation des ressources aussi bien que le partage d'expériences entre pays.

Executive Summary

THE YEAR 2008 witnessed a polio outbreak in Nigeria, with new international spread to bordering countries, persistent importations in south-central Africa and Sudan and the largest outbreak of polio in eight years in Pakistan. Elsewhere, western Uttar Pradesh in India - historically the world's most entrenched reservoir of polio but free of indigenous poliovirus type 1 for more than a year - was re-infected by a virus from a neighbouring state. By the end of the year, the number of children paralysed by polio in 2008 had returned to 1999 levels.

Les combats continuent dans l'Est de la RDC pendant qu'au Zimbabwe, les pourparlers pour le partage du pouvoir se sont subitement arrêtés. . Plusieurs pays font face à des épidémies et à la malnutrition consécutive à la crise alimentaire.

Our region continues to face political crises leading to insecurity, displacement of populations. The fighting continues to the Eastern DRC while in Zimbabwe the power sharing talk has ended abruptly. Many countries face disease outbreaks and malnutrition following food crisis. WHO is providing technical support in many countries in crisis.

Part I: Operational Requirements and Shortfalls

Overview of the 2007 Programme of Work

As the end of 2007 nears, the number of people the World Food Programme is seeking to support has risen to 83 million. The amount of food assistance required to assist these people is valued at US$3.4 billion. Considering resources mobilized thus far in 2007, the current level of funding falls short by some US$653 million.

Additional resources amounting to approximately US$800 million are required before the end of 2007 to ensure uninterrupted food aid deliveries for ongoing activities.
