WASHINGTON, October 7, 2010-Sub-Saharan Africa has made much progress against malaria in recent years, but this preventable and treatable disease still kills about 850,000 people in the region each year. Victory against malaria requires sustained funding, expanded prevention, stronger national and regional health systems, and continued research.

As political leaders across Africa prepare for the World Cup education summit scheduled for 11 July in Pretoria, UNESCO warns that shortfalls in aid threaten to derail efforts to get the region's 32 million out-of-school children into classrooms.

The education summit, convened by President Jacob Zuma, marks a culmination in efforts led by the 1Goal campaign and FIFA to push Africa's education crisis up the international agenda. That crisis is holding back economic growth, poverty reduction and progress in areas such as public health.

In Africa, where over 50 percent of household income is spent on food, the situation has put many households at the risk of starvation. This is compounded by the reduction in remittances as a result of the global recession.

Malaria prevention and control is a major U.S. foreign assistance objective and is a core component of a comprehensive U.S. Government (USG) Global Health Initiative (GHI), announced in May 2009 by President Barack Obama to reduce the burden of disease and strengthen communities around the world. The 2008 Tom Lantos and Henry J. Hyde Global Leadership against HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria Act (Lantos/Hyde Act) authorizes up to $5 billion in USG funding for malaria prevention and control for the period FY2009-2013.

In addition, the usual crises including several disease outbreaks are ongoing. Member states are receiving support from WHO for response mainly through the Health Clusters.
