FOREWORD

In a complex and fast-changing world, we remain focused and resolute in pursuit of our goal – to provide the most appropriate, effective medicine in the harshest of environments. As well as responding to vital needs, our aid is born of a desire to show solidarity with people who are suffering, whether as a result of conflict, neglect or disease.

Half way into the year, humanitarian organizations have only received 35 per cent of the money needed for relief worldwide. "Our humanitarian relief is a matter of life or death in many horrific war and disaster zones. The lack of funding leaves many desperate families without assistance. Mothers are forced to cut back on food for already malnourished children. Girls and boys are deprived of education and hope," warned Secretary General of the Norwegian Refugee Council, Jan Egeland.

In 2017, you did something amazing.

By supporting UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, you delivered assistance to families who have been forced to flee war or persecution in their time of greatest need. Thanks to you, we made sure that they received shelter, essential supplies such as blankets and kitchen supplies, food, clean water, and access to vital services. Together, we also helped to protect their rights and give them a safe place to call home.

Foreword by the Executive Director

Every woman has the right to decide whether or when she will become pregnant, and the right to give birth safely and live free from violence.

Yet every day, millions of women and girls whose lives have been upended by wars, conflicts or natural disasters are denied these rights. When we speak of leaving no one behind and reaching the furthest behind first, there can be no more compelling example of exactly whom we are speaking about.

She Decides has also supported several programmes covering multiple countries, such as the West African region as a whole. The Netherlands is spending a total of €29 million on She Decides in 2017 and 2018.
