Executive Summary

From Ebola to the bombing of Gaza, civil society was the first responder to humanitarian emergencies during the last year, but faces dire threats and a funding crisis around the world, says a new report.

“During the last year civil society was everywhere, doing great work often at the frontline of the world’s challenges, but at the same time having to stave off threats to its very existence,” said Dr Dhananjayan Sriskandarajah, the CIVICUS Secretary-General on launching the organisation’s 2015 State of Civil Society Report.

Overview of the 2007 Programme of Work

As the end of 2007 nears, the number of people the World Food Programme is seeking to support has risen to 83 million. The amount of food assistance required to assist these people is valued at US$3.4 billion. Considering resources mobilized thus far in 2007, the current level of funding falls short by some US$653 million.

Additional resources amounting to approximately US$800 million are required before the end of 2007 to ensure uninterrupted food aid deliveries for ongoing activities.

ANNUAL MESSAGE

Dear Friend of IMC,

In the 23 years since International Medical Corps first began its work to ease human suffering, we have witnessed both the heartbreak of tragedy and the resilience of the human spirit. 2006 was no exception.

Ongoing drought beset the Horn of Africa. Indonesia and Sri Lanka struggled to recover from the tsunami of late 2004. Conflict gripped Darfur, Northern Uganda, and Afghanistan, while in Azerbaijan thousands remained displaced years after their country's ceasefire with neighboring Armenia.

Massive flooding in the Horn of Africa and the multiple typhoons in South Asia were typical of the ever more frequent occurrence of floods, typhoons and earthquakes that have affected thousands of families in 2006. While in Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the occupied Palestinian territory, Sri Lanka and the Sudan, women and children continue to be impacted by the reverberating crossfire of conflict.
