Silver Spring, Maryland - In mid-October, Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Reproductive Health program managers from Cambodia, Nepal, Malawi, Armenia, Nicaragua, Ethiopia and Guinea met in Malawi to review progress of their programs and plan for the future. Since 1998, ADRA Reproductive Health programs in the seven countries have benefited 1,643,420 people.

Some 25 million people are now internally displaced due to conflicts that have spread since the Cold War, according to a major new survey published this week. Internally displaced people (IDPs) are a huge humanitarian problem; outnumbering conventional refugees by two-to-one and nearly always receiving less protection, says the four-year survey by the Global IDP Project.

The Landmine Update is the International Campaign to Ban Landmines quarterly newsletter. This edition is complemented by a calendar of upcoming events. To date, 145 countries have signed the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty, and 128 have ratified it. The most recent accessions are Comoros (19 September), Afghanistan (11 September), Democratic Republic of Congo (2 May) while recent ratifications include Cameroon (19 September), Angola (5 July) and Suriname (23 May).

Highlights

Latest information indicates a slightly larger global cereal output in 2001, of 1 870 million tonnes (including rice in milled terms). However, even at this level, production would still be less than the anticipated utilization requirements in 2001/02, leading to a significant draw-down of cereal stocks.

While Afghanistan currently faces a grave food supply situation, food emergencies persist in many other countries (see box on page 6).
