INTRODUCTION

This is the third and last issue for 2004 of this report prepared by the FAO Global Information and Early Warning System (GIEWS) on the food supply situation and cereal import and food aid requirements for all countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The report is designed to provide the latest analysis and information on the food situation in these countries to governments, international organizations and other institutions engaged in humanitarian operations.

Highlights

Eritrea-Critical nutrition situation

The lingering effects of the war with Ethiopia and the 2002 drought have had a significant impact on households' food security and nutritional status in a country where the general situation was already poor. The future of the food security situation is bleak, partly because of the recent failure of rains.

The National Nutrition Surveillance System, a collaborative inter-agency group set up by the Ministry of Health conducted a second round of nutrition surveys in Northern Red Sea, Gash Barka, Debub and Anseba in mid-2004.

CROP AND FOOD SUPPLY SITUATION

OVERVIEW

As of October 2004, the number of countries facing serious food shortages throughout the world stands at 35 with 23 in Africa, 6 in Asia/Near East, 5 in Latin America and 1 in Europe. The causes are varied but civil strife and adverse weather, including drought predominate. In many of these countries, the HIV/AIDS pandemic is a major contributing factor.

February-April 2005 CCA Outlooks at 4 Months Lead

Southern Africa

The outlook for Feb-Apr 2005 southern Africa rainfall at four months lead show a tilt in the odds favoring above normal rainfall across central South Africa, most of Namibia, the western half of Botswana, portions of southern Angola and, locally, over southwestern Zambia. There is a tilt in the odds favoring below normal rainfall locally over northern Mozambique. Climatology is expected elsewhere.
