The Department for International Development Clare Short today announced a further £30 million contribution to meet emergency assistance in Africa. £15m of the contribution will go to meeting emergency needs in Ethiopia and the other £15 million will be put to humanitarian assistance and recovery programmes across southern Africa.

Clare Short, Secretary of State for International Development said:

"I am very worried about food shortages in Africa.

Minister for Development Cooperation Agnes van Ardenne is allocating an extra €5 million to relieve the famine in Africa. The money will go to start the appeal for southern Africa and the Horn of Africa launched by the joint Dutch aid agencies on 13 December.

"Hunger threatens the lives of millions of people, most of them women and children. We are facing a disaster of such proportions that we have to do everything we possibly can to turn the tide," Van Ardenne announced.

Whenever a disaster of this kind occurs, the Dutch aid agencies join forces to raise funds.

WASHINGTON - From now through 2003, up to 35 million people in Africa will need food aid. The U.S. Agency for International Development is working with its partners--the World Food Program, other donors, and the private voluntary community--to deliver up to 2.75 million metric tons of food to help meet this need.

GENEVA -- Donor governments on Tuesday pledged another $280 million towards UNHCR's worldwide programs for 2003, bringing the total promised contributions to date to a record $317 million. This amounts to nearly one- third of the refugee agency's 2003 total projected needs of more than $1 billion.
