En el origen del proyecto que ha dado lugar a la creación del Observatorio de la Acción Humanitaria percibíamos la necesidad de hacer un seguimiento estable de la acción humanitaria en nuestro país, compartiendo un sentimiento muy extendido por aquellos que buscan la mejora del trabajo solidario a través de la reflexión, la discusión franca y la crítica (y autocrítica). Con esa intención los Informes anuales, iniciados con el análisis de 2003, pretenden ir cubriendo ese hueco, con clara vocación de permanencia y de apertura a la colaboración con la comunidad humanitaria española.

(Geneva and New York: 12 October 2006): Convening in Geneva today, the Advisory Group to the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) will examine the success of the Fund in its first seven months of operation and recommend a funding goal for 2007.

Fifty-two Member States, Japan's Hyogo Prefecture and the private organization Disaster Resource Network have pledged more than $273 million to the Fund's grant facility since its 9 March 2006 inauguration.

- The FAO's latest assessment shows that 40 countries are facing food emergencies and require external assistance. Among them, the most pressing humanitarian problem remains the crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan. The already precarious food supply situation may worsen if deteriorating security disrupts the main harvest due to start in the coming few weeks.

- Prospects for the 2006 world cereal harvest have deteriorated further since July.

Geneva (ICRC) - After nine months of operations, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is appealing to donors to cover a potential shortfall in funding this year.

A further 197.8 million Swiss francs is needed to cover the ICRC's operations in 2006. This represents 22.6% of this year's estimated field expenditure of 875.7 million francs.

ICRC director of operations Pierre Krähenbühl outlined the situation at a donors' meeting in Geneva today.
