Study points to new ways to reduce conflict in fragile states

A major research project by the UK's Stabilisation Unit explores the vital role of political deal-making in reducing violent conflict.

The Elite Bargains and Political Deals research indicates that greater focus on the politics of conflicts, and those who control power and resources on the ground, is crucial to reducing violence.

C’est la première fois que le nombre de décès dus à la rougeole est inférieur à 100 000 par an.

This marks the first time global measles deaths have fallen below 100 000 per year.

Senator the Hon Brett Mason farewelled 116 volunteers soon to depart to developing countries, during a reception at Old Parliament House this week.

The group was in Canberra to undergo training and make final preparations for their volunteering assignments.

The volunteers will be placed with host organisations for a period of 12 months to 2 years, and will assist with projects ranging from surf lifesaving training to providing advice in the use of Geographic Information Systems.
