Alarming situation in Somali region and Zone 2 and 4 of Afar region

Nutrition surveys conducted early this year confirmed the serious situation in parts of the pastoral areas (table 1). This is partly due to the poor last deyr rainy season (see NICS 8). Under-five mortality rates were also high in most of the areas surveyed.

Highlights

Djibouti-Drought alert-The last three rainy seasons were poor and this was compounded by the migration of pastoralists from Somalia, Ethiopia and Eritrea in search of pasture and resulted in the deterioration of the food security situation.

HIGHLIGHTS
Angola. Government offensives in the Central Highlands have resulted in new displacement and subsequent humanitarian needs. Very high prevalences of malnutrition have once more been re-ported in Malange among children and also adults, and thus the situation has not improved since the last survey in June and affects both IDPs and the resident population.

The funding situation has improved and access by road has sporadically been possible, thus some humanitarian assistance is being delivered. High prevalences of malnutrition among children under five have been recorded in the besieged cities of Huambo, Malange and Kuito.
