The Annual Report meets DFID’s obligation to report on its activities and progress under the International Development (Reporting and Transparency) Act 2006. It includes information on DFID’s results achieved, spending, performance and efficiency.

KEY STATISTICS

  • The UK’s Gross Public Expenditure on Development (GPEX) amounted to £9,007m in 2010/11. The DFID aid programme accounted for £7,689m (85%) of this expenditure.

  • GPEX increased to £9,007m in 2010/11 from £7,767m in 2009/10. This represents an increase of £1,240m (16%).

  • Excluding debt relief, GPEX totalled £8,829m in 2010/11; this represents an increase of £1,161m (15%) over the 2009/10 total of £7,668m.

Evidence for multiple forms of impact

Cash transfers are one of the more thoroughly researched forms of development intervention. Latin American countries that pioneered the current generation of cash transfers built in best-practice monitoring and evaluation (M&E). The association of cash transfers with high quality M&E and impact evaluation has continued as cash transfers have spread, but remains less developed in low-income countries.

Executive Summary

This report evaluates DFID's Humanitarian Assistance spending during the financial year 2009/10. The report does not include a breakdown of the UK contribution (13%) to the European Commission Humanitarian Office (ECHO) which spent €930 million on Humanitarian assistance during 2009. Excluding ECHO contributions, the report finds that DFID spent £428 million on humanitarian assistance during 2009/10 which was 6.3%% of the DFID programme.
