Ongoing programs and emergency response helps tens of thousands in crisis

These happy faces say it all: 3,200 Vietnamese children no longer go hungry, thanks to a Pediatric Nutrition Program supported by AmeriCares and its partners. In Vietnam, where one-third of children under age 5 suffer from stunted growth due to malnutrition, this program is a shining example of hope and progress.

Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) programs often represent vital components of the response by USAID’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA) to rapid-onset disasters and complex emergencies, as disaster-affected populations are more susceptible to illness and death from waterborne and communicable diseases. As a result, WASH interventions include latrine construction, provision of safe drinking water, and hygiene promotion—commonly focused upon improved hand-washing, water collection and storage, and sanitation practices.

  • The UK’s Gross Public Expenditure on Development (GPEX) amounted to £9,007m in 2010/11. The DFID aid programme accounted for £7,689m (85%) of this expenditure.

  • GPEX increased to £9,007m in 2010/11 from £7,767m in 2009/10. This represents an increase of £1,240m (16%).

  • Excluding debt relief, GPEX totalled £8,829m in 2010/11; this represents an increase of £1,161m (15%) over the 2009/10 total of £7,668m.
