United Nations aid operations in West Africa have received a boost with the injection of fresh funds to allow humanitarian flights in the region to continue, but similar air services in Chad will have to be cut within three weeks unless donors come forward with more assistance.

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) reported today that its Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) operations for Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea, which had been slated to close on Monday, will now be able to continue through September after the European Union contributed €100,000.

Près de 5 milliards de dollars sont encore nécessaires pour faire face cette année aux crises humanitaires les plus graves à travers le monde, a indiqué mardi le Bureau de la coordination des affaires humanitaires (OCHA), qui se félicite toutefois que 49% des fonds requis aient déjà été reçus.

Le total réclamé par les agences des Nations Unies, l'Organisation internationale pour les migrations et près de 500 organisations non-gouvernementales pour l'année 2009 s'élève désormais à 9,5 milliards de dollars, rappelle l'OCHA.

The United Nations said it is shutting down its Humanitarian Air Service in West Africa due to a serious lack of funding, seriously impairing aid operations in Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Cote d'Ivoire.
